A student may transfer up to two (2) credits of foundation field education and up to four (4) credits of advanced field education to cover field education requirements. Additional field credits can be approved as elective credits (please refer to volume 3, section 4.01 Elective & Transfer Field Credits).) All students must complete a minimum of eight (8) credits of advanced field education aligned with their primary pathway over two consecutive terms at the University of Michigan.
Foundation field education credits transferred to the University of Michigan cannot exceed the credits earned at another institution for foundation field education. The total foundation field/practicum hours will be converted to the UM School of Social Work credits to determine total credit transfer eligibility:
• Each credit of foundation field education equals 114 clock hours. • Each credit of advanced field education credit equals 56 clock hours.
If a student has earned more than the equivalent of two (2) credit hours for foundation field education, no credit may be awarded toward advanced field education, regardless of the number of clock hours completed, if the transferred credit is identified as foundation field education. If a student completed a second term of foundation field education, they may transfer in up to two credits to cover elective requirements.
Field education credits to be transferred to the University of Michigan as advanced field education must be designated as advanced field education by the other institution to receive advanced field education credit.
Applicants to the MSW program should review the MSW Program Transfer Applicants page (https://ssw.umich.edu/programs/msw/apply/transfer-applicants ) and submit the “Review My Courses” form (https://ssw.umich.edu/assets/transfer-applicant-credits/index.php?page=applicant-form ) at or prior to the time of application. Field Placement options may be impacted and/or limited based on the timing in the placement cycle and if a reduction in field credits is requested. Potential transfer credits will be reviewed by the MSW program director and the director of field education. Students will be notified before registering for the first term how the potential transfer credits would count in the MSW program.
