Summary: Many field sites require drug screenings as a prerequisite for acceptance in a field placement.

Many field sites require drug screenings as a prerequisite for acceptance in a field placement.

In most cases, it will be clear on the field site's webpage that substance/drug screening (or criminal background checks, or certain immunizations, etc.) are a requirement of the placement. Upon interviewing for placement and conditional acceptance, students may be asked to participate in a substance/drug screening, which if they pass, leads to an official offer of field placement.

Should a student refuse to participate in a substance/drug screening, the field site has the opportunity to decline to host the student for field placement.

The following conditions will require a student to have a field success meeting with the director of field education (or designee):

• During the field site onboarding process, the student fails the substance/drug screen • Termination of the student from an accepted or current field placement due to a positive substance/drug screen • Concerns about the student's substance use in field being raised by the site, field instructor, or field faculty

If any of the above occur, a field success meeting will be scheduled. The director of field education (or designee) may also need to consult with the MSW program director and the Office of Student Services and Enrollment Management,. The field success meeting will determine if/when the student will be referred to another field placement. The length of this process may necessitate adding an additional term and/or may delay graduation. At the Field Success Meeting, a determination will also be made as to whether a Student Success meeting is needed, or a referral to the associate dean for educational programs (ADEP). If escalated to the ADEP, the ADEP office will determine whether a referral to the Academic Concerns Committee is warranted.
